100 days of Pi’s Open Network

Just how far has one of the most talked about cryptocurrencies come in 100 days since the launch of its Open Network?

What started as a political benchmark, coined by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt after his early extraordinary productivity, has become a key period of measurement for businesses across industries: the first 100 days.

One project, Pi Network, just passed the first 100 days mark since its Open Network launch in February 2025.

During that time, Pi Network has seen impactful achievements, both above and below the hood. Below are some of those achievements that may be of interest to you.

Above the Hood

Pi officially launched its Open Network on February 20th this year. This transition marked the end of the Enclosed Network and the beginning of one that allowed external connectivity for the ecosystem and its users. This meant that Pi users, or “Pioneers,” were enabled to engage in transactions beyond the Pi ecosystem, connecting its thriving network to the broader blockchain world and expanding its real-world functionality.

Millions of Pioneers are now using Pi, tens of thousands of businesses are integrating it into their services, and a significant number of apps have been built to address community and ecosystem needs, and to drive real-world engagement. Open Network has showcased Pi’s strength and stability for not just the Pi community but also the broader crypto space and the Web3 world.

In addition, following the successful launch, and to help existing and new community members get the most use of the Open Network, Pi held a series of utility-focused community events and provided Pioneers with updates to improve their user experience.

Pi Day 2025, Pi’s first since Open Network launch (but sixth since it was founded), was celebrated on March 14 and saw the expansion of the Pi ecosystem with additional utility improvements on all levels, including local commerce, apps-level and platform-level utilities, leveraging the strength and collective resources of the global Pi community.

Pi Day brought the introduction of several features, as well as the commencement of the annual global PiFest shopping period. These releases include the “.pi Domains Auction,” as well as an expansion of Mainnet Ecosystem applications and a design revamp of Pi’s Mainnet Ecosystem Interface.

Pi Fest, held from Pi Day, March 14, to March 21, 2025, demonstrated the widespread integration of Pi into everyday transactions worldwide. This year’s PiFest showcased Open Network’s enhanced connectivity and displayed the increased real-world utility of Pi following Open Network. This event featured over 125,000 registered merchant sellers, including 58,000 active sellers, and more than 1.8 million Pioneer shoppers on the community-built Map of Pi app.

Pi Network also introduced the .pi Domains Auction, an initiative aimed at creating utility at the platform-level for the ecosystem by allowing Pioneers to secure unique digital identifiers or virtual storefronts within the Pi ecosystem, similar to web addresses for traditional internet domains. To date, there are more than 116,000 active bids, and the Auction has had the participation of over 54,000 unique bidders.

On May 14, Pi Foundation launched a $100 million investment initiative called Pi Network Ventures.

This initiative seeks to identify and support high-impact and disruptive startups and businesses by mirroring Silicon Valley venture capital practices with respect to sourcing, selection, vetting, and more. Pi Network Ventures intends to invest in companies ranging from early-stage startups to Series B ventures and beyond. Investments are intended to provide both capital and strategic value over a broader time frame to those believed to be best positioned to create value in the world and help provide additional ways to use Pi worldwide.

Gaming is one important vertical for Pi Network Ventures to invest in through the initiative. Pi Network is a social network-based blockchain with key strengths aligning with gaming, such as a massive audience, social interactions, and collective attention. Therefore, Pi Network Ventures is actively looking at projects that incorporate game design or full-fledged games to enhance the ecosystem and user experience.

Later in May, Pi announced the launch of FruityPi, a deceptively simple fruit-merging game that’s now live in the Pi Browser. Players drop fruit into a bin, trying to evolve them into bigger and rarer fruits, all while avoiding an overflow. But beneath the fun is something more meaningful: a live, real-world demonstration of Pi’s gaming utility in action.

In addition to the releases, new features, and events, Pi’s Founders have sought to engage with the community and media. Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis spoke on a decentralised AI panel at the industry leading Consensus 2025 event in Toronto, and both Founders have also featured in the media as influential leaders in their field, with Pi Founder Dr. Chengdiao Fan named in the Geekwire Top Ten TechStars of 2025, and Nicolas identified as one of the most inspirational speakers by USA Today.

Below the Hood

Below the hood, during the first 100 days of Open Network, Pioneers experienced product, ecosystem, and infrastructure updates that facilitate Pi’s utility creation, practical use, and adoption.

Mainnet Ecosystem Interface applications are now fully open in the Developer Portal to developers who meet the Mainnet app deployment requirements.

Pi Ad Network has expanded beyond its initial pilot group and is now accepting applications from a broader group of developers. Members of the pilot group are already generating ad revenue from this program, which is allowing these developers to build sustainably.

Advances in the migration process have contributed to more than 3 million additional Pioneers migrating to the Mainnet since Open Network, bringing the total to over 13 million migrated Mainnet Pioneers.

Pi Network continues to provide Pioneers with enhanced security, account management upgrades, and continued support. These include: two-factor authentication via email (trusted emails are now used for verification and recovery), and KYC-verified Pioneers can change their phone number after passing liveness checks. These improvements directly reduced friction and increased resilience across the network.

Pi’s wallet activation also allowed for more Pioneers, and prospective Pioneers, to create Mainnet wallets and participate in the Mainnet ecosystem. Identity-verified Pioneers, including those tentatively KYC’d, can activate Mainnet wallets prior to their migration, which in turn unblocks their participation in, and broadens the inclusion of, the Mainnet blockchain and its apps. The first 100 days of Open Network displayed the utility of Pi, apps, opportunities to create within and outside the ecosystem, and practical, real-world use of Pi and the Pi ecosystem.
